Rep. Speedy proposes to rename section of I-74 after fallen Deputy John Durm

STATEHOUSE (Sept. 12, 2023) – The Interim Study Committee on Roads and Transportation today considered State Rep. Mike Speedy's (R-Indianapolis) proposal to rename a section of I-74 after fallen Marion County Sheriff's Deputy John Durm.

Speedy said he would like to rename a mile of I-74 in Indianapolis after Durm, a 38-year veteran of the sheriff's department, who was killed in the line of duty in July. The interim study committee is reviewing the proposal, which marks the first step in the road and bridge renaming process.

"Deputy Durm dedicated his career, and ultimately, gave his life to protecting Marion County," Speedy said. "Our community lost an incredible public servant, his department lost an invaluable partner, and his family lost a loving father and husband. He's greatly missed."

Durm was fatally strangled by a detainee when transporting the inmate from Eskenazi Hospital to the Adult Detention Center in Indianapolis.

Once the proposal, offered by Speedy and State Rep. Mitch Gore (D-Indianapolis), is approved by the interim committee, the pair plans to file a formal resolution for consideration and adoption by the House and Senate during the 2024 legislative session. Speedy said if the resolution clears the General Assembly, the Indiana Department of Transportation could move forward with the road renaming.
