STATEHOUSE (March 21, 2017) – State Rep. Tom Saunders (R-Lewisville) helped raise nearly $4,000 for cancer research this week during the Indiana House of Representatives’ sixth annual bake sale and silent auction.
“Being able to organize this event every year is something I enjoy because it brings the Statehouse together for a great cause,” Saunders said. “Nearly everyone has been affected in one way or another by cancer, and it was encouraging to see such generous donations and contributions that will go toward finding a cure.”
Members, spouses and staff of the House brought in baked goods to sell and historical items to auction off for the event. Some of the items included a basketball signed by every member of the 1954 state championship Milan High School basketball team and a reprint of President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 inaugural address. All proceeds from the fundraiser went to the American Cancer Society.
The fundraiser was started in 2011 after two members of the Indiana House of Representatives’ staff were diagnosed with cancer. Both women eventually won their fights with the disease and have been cancer free for six years.
State Rep. Saunders (R-Lewisville) represents House District 54, which includes Henry County and portions of Rush and Wayne counties.
