STATEHOUSE – House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis) appointed State Representative Alan Morrison (R-Terre Haute) to serve on the following interim study committees: Regulatory Flexibility and School Safety.

“I’m privileged to receive these committee appointments, and I’m eager to continue to move our state forward by addressing these critical issues – especially the issue of school safety,” said Rep. Morrison. “Summer study committees lay the groundwork for the General Assembly in addressing pertinent policy discussions and their effect on Hoosiers and their families. Lawmakers have a bigger window of time to thoroughly examine, discuss and propose any necessary solutions during the interim versus the compressed time frame of session.”

After the conclusion of every legislation session, the Legislative Council meets to assign topics for study during the summer months, known as the interim. Additionally, the council establishes any new interim committee that is needed to examine a particular issue. Most interim committees will begin meeting in July with their work wrapping up toward the end of October.

Interim committees are an integral part of the legislative process. Even though session is adjourned for 2013, legislators will be continuing their duties by conducting in-depth studies of various topics assigned to their committees. Interim committees with specific expertise receive public testimony and work out the details of proposed legislation before it is introduced in the 2014 session.

“As a member of the School Safety Study Committee, my colleagues and I will work together with experts and hear public testimony to consider how to best protect Hoosier students,” said Rep. Morrison. “Through a private and public sector partnership, I believe Vigo County School Corporation is setting the example on school safety. During these committee meetings, we will look at what various school corporations are doing and work towards a strategy to keep Indiana’s school system incident free.”
