Rep. Mike Speedy authors legislation to protect Hoosier children from online porn

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 22, 2024) – State Rep. Mike Speedy (R-Indianapolis) said he's focused on protecting Hoosier children from harmful and dangerous online content during the 2024 legislative session.

The Indianapolis lawmaker says that's because multiple studies show that exposure to pornography at a young age may lead to poor mental health, sexism and objectification, and sexual violence. Speedy said due to the prevalence and accessibility of explicit content online, Indiana must do more to protect young Hoosiers.

"We know that pornography can harm children, but our laws safeguarding minors from this type of content haven't kept pace with technology," Speedy said. "Some adult websites may only require a person to click 'yes' or 'no' if they're 18 or not. That's why I'm offering legislation to require an additional layer of age verification when individuals visit these adult websites."

House Bill 1295, authored by Speedy, would require pornographic websites to verify users are at least 18 by providing proof of age, such as a driver's license, before accessing the website. The bill would also give legal recourse to a parent or guardian whose child has been harmed by accessing harmful online materials.

Speedy's bill would also prohibit adult-oriented websites that conduct age verification checks from retaining any personal information of its users.

House Bill 1295
is assigned to the House Judiciary Committee. Watch session and committees live, and view legislation at iga.in.gov.
