(STATEHOUSE) Jan. 22, 2008 - Today, Rep. Eric A. Gutwein (R-Rensselaer) voted against a proposed amendment to House Bill 1001 authored by Rep. David Niezgodski (D-South Bend) that excludes school corporations from the referendum process for any projects that relate to classroom learning.

"While I am in full support of property tax reform, I strongly disagree with this amendment," said Rep. Gutwein. "It removes the voters' right to vote on projects that affect their community. I believe that my constituents, as well as all Hoosiers, are capable of making solid judgments that concern the need for local projects. This amendment is an insult to all Hoosiers. It is an injustice to remove a person's right to think and make responsible decisions that could affect their property tax bills."

The amendment passed by a party-line vote.
