(STATEHOUSE) Jan. 22, 2008 - State Rep. Eric A. Gutwein (R-Brookston) today offered an amendment that would cap farmers' property tax payments at 2 percent of their assessed value. The amendment was to Gov. Mitch Daniels' property tax plan. An amendment with the same language was adopted.
"Far too much uncertainty is involved in the farming business," said Rep. Gutwein. "Many factors, such as the weather and equipment cost, can affect a farmers profit gain from year to year. Capping property tax bills for farmers will provide them with an idea of how much they could be expected to pay."
House Bill 1001 will be eligible for full passage by the House of Representatives on Thursday. If the bill passes the House, it will then move to the Senate for consideration
