STATEHOUSE-House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis) appointed State Rep. Doug Gutwein (R-Francesville) to serve as the Chairman of the Unemployment Insurance Oversight Committee, as well as serving as a member of the Interim Study Committee on Driver Education.
"To be appointed to chairman is an honor," said Rep. Gutwein. "Though we accomplished a lot this past session, there is still work to be done and these committees serve as an opportunity for us to take a closer look."
The Legislative Council meets after session concludes to assign topics for study during the interim as well as establish any new interim committee that is needed to examine a particular issue. Interim committees are an integral component of the legislative process. The majority of the committees will begin in July and end around October.
The committees that Rep. Gutwein will be serving on are charged with studying the following:
Unemployment Insurance Oversight Committee
The committee will study the feasibility and value of indexing unemployment benefits and the taxable wage base
Interim Study Committee on Driver Education
The committee will Study the administration of driver education by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and the Department of Education and;
Address the standards for an Internet component and classroom component of driver instruction and;
Discuss the penalties for instructional providers that fail to follow the standards for instruction driving experience and;
Discuss the statistics for moving violations accrued by certain individuals less than 18 years of age and;
Address the effectiveness of driver education courses on the accident rates of young drivers and;Discuss the standards and curriculum content for an effective driver education program
"Summer study committees allow us to continue to prepare for the upcoming 2012 session," said Rep. Gutwein.
