"I am grateful that Governor Daniels has ordered a reassessment of all real property in Marion County," said Representative Larry Buell (R-Indianapolis). "Because the politically-divided General Assembly was unable to give Hoosier homeowners comprehensive property tax relief in the 2007 legislative session, it was vital that the governor provide some sort of immediate relief for property taxpayers.
"Since receiving their property tax bills in Marion County, homeowners have been in a state of panic. They have been trying to understand why their property tax bills increased at such enormous rates. They have also been trying to determine whether they could pay their property tax bills or whether they would have to move out of their homes. By freezing Marion County tax bills at the 2006 levels, homeowners won't be faced with this tough decision right now. It is my hope that the Commission on Local Government Reform will be able to develop a plan that will provide a long-term solution to Indiana's property tax problem, preventing a crisis like this from ever happening again."
