STATEHOUSE — House Speaker Brian C. Bosma (R-Indianapolis) is hosting the first-ever “Tweet Seats” during Governor Mike Pence’s State of the State address on Tuesday. Five individuals from around the state will be in attendance, tweeting live from the Statehouse with updates of Gov. Pence’s address.

The Tweet Seats will provide updates, thoughts and commentary during the State of the State to address their followers and anyone else subscribing to certain hashtags or keywords used on Twitter to help organize information.

“It is imperative that we create new ways to provide accessibility to Hoosiers. This is the people’s house – and Twitter has become such a prevalent communication tool, this will be a great way to get more people involved with what’s happening at the Statehouse,” said Speaker Brian Bosma.

This decision to provide Tweet Seats is a further extension of Speaker Bosma’s previous transparency initiatives. In 2005, Speaker Bosma began live streaming House floor proceedings. In 2011, he made every House committee meeting available via the Internet.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, they are unaware of any other state ever creating such a platform to utilize social media such as Tweet Seats.

“We must continue to embrace technology and consider new ways to communicate to the public. It is evident that social media is not a trend, but is here to stay.  We will continue to find unique ways to utilize technology and to provide transparency to constituents,” said Speaker Bosma.

Tweet Seat participants will include:

  • Josh Gillespie, Hoosier Access (@joshgillespie, @HoosierAccess)
  • Gerry Dick, Inside Indiana Business (@GerryDick)
  • Indiana Chamber of Commerce (@IndianaChamber)
  • Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation (@HVAFofIndiana)
  • Scott Wise, CEO of Scotty’s Brewhouse (@brewhouse)

The participants will attend a brief “twitter availability” with House Speaker Brian Bosma prior to the State of the State address where a “twit pic” will be released.

The House Republicans use their Twitter account to provide legislative updates to their followers, including vote summaries when the House is in session and notifications of new episodes of IN the House, their online video series and putting a spotlight on events with representatives.
