STATEHOUSE (March 24, 2009) - Rep. Jeff Espich (R-Uniondale) today joined the Indiana General Assembly in honoring the families of Indiana soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice defending their country, especially those fighting the war on terrorism. 

In a resolution, the Indiana General Assembly offered gratitude and prayers to the families of the 152 fallen men and women from Indiana.  As part of the ceremony, the families were invited into the House chamber for the reading of the resolution.  Following this reading, the names of the soldiers were read and Adjutant General David Umberger spoke before the assembly. 

"Seeing all the families of soldiers who lost their lives is awe inspiring," said Rep. Espich. "It is an honor to be in the company of these families who have given so much for their country. We can never repay these families for their loss, but we can offer them our most sincere gratitude."

Rep. Espich represents parts of Allen, Grant, and Wells counties. The names of 14 soldiers from Allen, Grant, and Wells counties were read to the House. 

Allen County

Army National Guard Cpl. Matthew A. Commons, age 21.  Matthew gave his life on March 4, 2002, in Afghanistan.

Army Spc. Brian H. Penisten, age 28.  Kyle gave his life on November 2, 2003, in Iraq.

Army National Guard Spc. Donald R. McCune, age 20. Donald gave his life on August 5, 2004, in Iraq.

Army Cpl. Jonathan F. Blair, age 21. Jonathan gave his life on November 19, 2005, in Iraq.

Army Pfc. Richard P. Langenbrunner, age 19. Richard gave his life on April 17, 2007, Iraq.

Army Cpl. Ryan A. Woodward, age 22. Ryan gave his life on September 8, 2007, in Iraq.

Army National Guard Spc. James M. Clay, age 25. James gave his life on November 13, 2008, in Iraq.

Grant County

U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Christopher S. Ebert, age 21. Christopher gave his life on September 17, 2004, in Iraq.

U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Lance M. Thompson, age 21. Lance gave his life on November 15, 2004, in Iraq.

Army Reserves Pfc. Joshua A. Ramsey, age 19. Joshua gave his life on December 12, 2004, in Iraq.

Army National Reserves Spc. Joshua Lee Hill, age 24. Joshua gave his life on March 12, 2006, in Afghanistan.

Army Pvt. David A. Kirkpatrick, age 20. David gave his life on April 27, 2007, in Iraq.

Maryland Army National Guard Sfc. Collin J. Bowen, age 38. Collin gave his life March 14, 2008, in Afghanistan.

Wells County

Indiana Army National Guard Master Sgt. Michael T. Hiester, age 33. Michael gave his life on March 26, 2005, in Afghanistan.


The resolution concluded with the ceremonial playing of taps.
