(Statehouse) August 10, 2007-State Representative Woody Burton (R-Greenwood) served as a Guest Judge for the "Great American SPAM Championship" at the State Fair on Thursday. Contestants in the "Great American SPAM Championship" combined SPAM with other ingredients to create new, innovative recipes. The recipes entered in the competition included breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes. Each contestant was only allowed to enter one recipe. The recipes were required to consist of at least one can of SPAM, any variety, and use no more than 10 additional ingredients. "It was amazing to see how creative the contestants were with their recipes!" said Burton. Burton judged the recipes on taste appeal (40 percent), appearance (30 percent) and originality of recipe (30 percent). SPAM sushi and SPAM quiche were among the many varieties of SPAM dishes entered in the competition. "I really enjoyed being a judge for the SPAM contest," said Burton. "As a young boy from the Southside, my mom created all sorts of recipes using SPAM. I was practically raised on it. It was fun to relive that time in my life." |
