(Statehouse) May 9, 2007-Governor Mitch Daniels has signed House Enrolled Act 1753 (HEA 1753) co-authored by Representative Woody Burton (R-Greenwood). HEA 1753 requires the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority to establish a program to provide free mortgage foreclosure counseling and education to homeowners who have defaulted on or are in danger of defaulting on the mortgages on their homes. "This program would provide counseling that would help homeowners better understand their mortgage payments and prevent foreclosures," said Burton. "Most people don't understand that their home mortgage may be extended, allowing them more time to pay it off. They get behind on payments and fear that they could lose their home. This counseling would help them understand the situation and not give up on finding a solution." The act will provide foreclosure prevention counseling with trained counselors and teachers. In addition, the program will include a central toll-free telephone number that homeowners could call for advice and counseling regarding foreclosure. Burton encourages his constituents to contact him with any questions, comments, or concerns. He can be reached by mail at Rep. Woody Burton, 200 W. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46204, by phone at (317) 232-9824, or by email at H58@in.gov.
