Homestead Verification Form

Since 2010, Hoosiers have received an extra sheet of pink paper with their property tax bill or statement. The extra form is a result of legislation enacted in 2009 through House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1344.

This law requires tax statements to include a form that allows taxpayers to verify their residency and eligibility for the homestead deduction. This form also works as extra protection against homestead fraud.

It is imperative that homeowners fill out this form, because it allows them to continue receiving the homestead standard deduction. A homeowner who does not fill out this form could potentially lose their homestead deduction beginning in 2013. The form must be filled out and competed by January 1, 2013.

Individuals or married couples claiming the deduction must complete this form to verify eligibility and to provide identifications numbers. Homeowners must put the last five digits of both their driver’s license and social security number. The information will only be used to track the homestead database and to prevent fraud.

The intent of the legislation is to ensure that the property tax burden is spread fairly among all property owners in Indiana. This will help make taxes lower for everyone.
