Eberhart Votes to Protect Gun Owner Privacy
STATEHOUSE-Rep. Sean Eberhart (R-Shelbyville) today voted in support of legislation affirming Hoosier gun owners' rights to confidentiality when obtaining a license for a firearm. House Bill 1068 passed the House Natural Resource Committee by a vote of 12-0.
"I will always support Hoosiers and their second amendment rights," said Rep. Eberhart. "This bill would protect the confidentiality and rights of gun owners in Indiana. It's absolutely the right course of action to further protect Hoosiers' private information from the general public."
House Bill 1068 provides confidentiality to any person obtaining a handgun license. Whether renewing or obtaining a license to carry a handgun, the information of the person would remain confidential. Only under certain circumstances would the information be released. That includes the request of the federal, state or local government for law enforcement purposes or to determine the legality of a handgun license. Information may also be released to someone gathering journalistic or educational research but no personal information would be released about the license holder.
Rep. Eberhart is also in favor of HB 1065, a measure that prohibits the state or any other person from prohibiting or restricting the lawful possession, sale, transportation, storage or use of firearms during a declared disaster emergency, energy emergency, or local disaster emergency. This bill will be heard next week in the House Natural Resource Committee.
