Supporting small businesses
If you drove by my house on any given day, there is a good chance you would see me mowing my lawn. As odd as it may seem, lawn mowing is passion of mine. It’s where I do my best praying, gather my deepest thoughts and the reason I continuously begged my husband to replace my nearly 12-year-old mower. And after all the years of repairs, I knew exactly what business I was going to buy from.
Over the years my old mower made multiple trips to Art’s Mower Repair. Art’s even made house calls to fix it when they needed to. I appreciated the service as well as the company’s patience with my husband and me as we put off buying a new one. So when we recently bought my new mower, I was pleased by how gracious they were with all they had to offer. The type of customer care I received can only be found at locally owned businesses.
Whether I am driving through Batesville or visiting Oldenburg, I always think about the positive impact locally owned stores have on our communities. Besides the exceptional, friendly service, there is always a face you recognize and an inviting atmosphere. It’s rewarding to know that when you purchase something from these organizations, you’re supporting hard-working Hoosiers and their families.
In Indiana, being neighborly is a part of our culture, so supporting small business is a part of that. To help these organizations thrive, the Office of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (OSBE) was codified in House Enrolled Act 1332, allowing multiple resources to be more readily available.
The OSBE will operate as a middleman; assisting small businesses easily connect with government agencies as different issues arise. This office will also disperse important information and work with university and entrepreneurship programs to help foster an entrepreneurial environment within Indiana.
Supporting small business is something I will always do, whether I am supporting legislation or buying from the Village Store in Oldenburg. I recognize the dedication that goes into running a business because I own one. One of my favorite things about my restaurant, the Brau Haus, is that running it allows me to serve our friends and neighbors on a daily basis.
I want everyone to think about these ideas the next time to you go to purchase anything. Remember that supporting small business fosters our local economy while encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit in our area. I also hope our local small businesses take a look at what the OSBE has to offer, and know that the General Assembly has their back.
