There is nothing more gratifying than when you are able to see the results of your hard work and, in my case, persistence. For some time now, we have been working with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) in order to make additional safety improvements to the intersection of US 40 and State Road 3, west of Dunreith.
I have received countless emails, letters and phone calls regarding this dangerous intersection. Unfortunately, we have had several accidents over the years involving community members and those traveling through our community.
So it is with a tremendous amount of excitement to announce that INDOT has truly delivered. They will be adding overhead lighting and sign flashers to that intersection—to be implemented as soon as possible.
Before coming to this conclusion, INDOT conducted a study to identify what safety improvements were best for that specific intersection. Engineers evaluated traffic and pedestrian volumes, school crossings, the coordinated signal system, the roadway network and crash history, to name a few. All crash occurrences are also considered when studying an intersection, including property damage, personal injury and fatal accidents.
The team of traffic engineers assigned to the study made the following recommendations:
■ Install a single red flashing beacon above the stop signs for both the near right side and the near left side stop signs for northbound traffic on State Road 3.
The overhead lighting at the intersection is intended to increase nighttime visibility and decrease nighttime accidents. Based on the number of crashes since 2008, the improved lighting and other safety improvements are expected to address or reduce the most frequent types of crashes at the intersection.
My office and I have been working with INDOT for some time now and we are all so pleased that were able to pull together and make this happen for our community.
For those community members that contacted me regarding this issue, I would like to say “thank you.” Thank you for your persistence and concern for our community. Together, we can help build a safer community for all to enjoy!
