Rep. Tom Saunders (R-Lewisville) sponsored legislation today in order to establish a Sustainable Natural Resource Task Force. Senate Bill 375 passed out of the House with a unanimous vote.
The task force will collect programmatic and funding data on current natural resource protection programs in Indiana; perform a needs-assessment concerning natural resource programs; and collect information concerning the natural resource protection programs of other states.
"This legislation will help the Department of Natural Resources, Indiana Department of Environmental Matters and other groups, agencies, individuals and non-profits collaborate and be more effective in addressing the issues facing Indiana," said Rep. Saunders.
The task force will consist of 10 members, appointed as follows:
- Two members of the Senate will be appointed by the President Pro Tempore.
- Three additional Senate members appointed by the President Pro Tempore, each of whom is recommended by one of the following organizations:
o Indiana Farm Bureau
o Indiana Forestry and Woodland Owners Association
o Nature Conservancy
- Two members of the House will be appointed by the Speaker.
- Three additional members of the House will be appointed by the Speaker, each of whom is recommended by one of the following organizations:
o Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
o Indiana Wildlife Federation.
o Indiana Land Protection Alliance.
The appointing authority-either the Speaker or President Pro Tempore-who appointed a member of the task force has the authority to remove that member if needed.
