(Statehouse) June 21, 2007- In order to improve customer service at the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), State Representative Bob Cherry (R-Greenfield) has worked with Governor Mitch Daniels and BMV Commissioner Ron Stiver to partner the state with Dellen Automotive Family of Greenfield. The agreement will allow the auto dealer to offer titling and registration services at the time of a car sale. This program was part of the House Republican 2007 legislative agenda that was rolled out last summer.
Dellen Automotive Family has entered into a contract with the state and installation has begun on equipment. Rep. Cherry is hopeful that customers will be able to perform their registration and titling needs at the dealership in the coming weeks.
"This partnership will be very beneficial to our community," stated Rep. Cherry. "Combining services like titling and registration at the point of purchase is much easier than having to make a separate trip to the BMV. I'm glad that Dellen Automotive has decided to work with the state to provide this service. Even though it is a pilot program now, I'm hopeful that all dealerships will be able to participate in this program when it is fully implemented."
Before coming to agreements with multiple dealerships, the BMV started an eight-week pilot program in Mishawaka in early May. After the success of the pilot program, thirteen other dealerships around the state so far have agreed to work with the BMV. More than 500 successful customer transactions have been completed at the dealerships during the pilot period. Four additional dealerships are expected to sign on by the end of June, with a total of 50 expected by year end.
Of the 14 dealerships that have signed contracts for pilot program, nine are currently operational, and five others are scheduled for installation in the coming weeks.

Indiana joins 25 other states offering titling and registration services at car dealerships.
Individual dealerships have the discretion to charge a convenience fee for the service or opt to offer the service free of charge. They may also choose to provide the service solely for their customers or to offer them to any Hoosier, according to Stiver.
"This is an exciting opportunity for us to bring BMV services to customers in more convenient, non-branch locations," said BMV Commissioner Ron Stiver. "It creates a win-win scenario for everyone, while reducing traffic in our branches and providing faster visit times for customers who need to visit a branch for more complicated transactions."
