(STATEHOUSE) August 29, 2007 - This week, State Representative Dick Dodge (R- Pleasant Lake) is in Traverse City, Michigan at the Council of State Governments, 62nd annual meeting of the Midwest Legislative Conference (MLC). The conference is being held August 26-29 to unite lawmakers from the Midwest to share information and exchange ideas to identify solutions to regional problems.
Conference attendees are attending committee meetings focusing on agriculture and natural resources, economic development, energy, health and human services, and Midwest-Canada relations. In addition to the committees, additional topics are also being discussed, one of yesterday's focuses was "healthy states." Lawmakers are examining trends and practices to improve the well-being of a state's people and communities. This subject could be especially beneficial for Indiana, since it was just named the ninth most obese state in the union.
"Many states in the Midwest are often combating the same issues," said Rep. Dodge. "By working together, we can learn from each others successes and failures to develop real solutions in a timely manner."
The MLC is a regional association of state legislatures representing 11 Midwestern states: Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The Canadian provinces of Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan are also eligible to participate in MLC activities.
Rep. Dodge encourages local constituents to contact him with questions or concerns through e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org, or by calling the Statehouse toll-free at 1-800-382-9841. It is also possible to write him at 200 W. Washington St, Indianapolis, IN 46204.
