[r49] Rep. Culver's Statement on the the State Budget and Unemployment Insurance (4/30/2009)

Thursday, April 30, 2009

Start Date: 4/30/2009 All Day
End Date: 4/30/2009

Please include the following statements from Rep. Culver in your coverage of legislative action on these issues:

State budget

"Every budget plan Indiana passes reaps consequences later, and the consequences of the budget bill before us last night were scary.  The budget would have spent federal stimulus funds on the day-to-day running of our state and not for one-time investments that create more jobs, putting us in a difficult fiscal situation when those federal dollars ran out. At a time when taxpayers are taking pay cuts and losing jobs, the least our budget should do is flat line expenses."

Unemployment insurance

"I want to do what's best for the thousands of unemployed workers in my district.  As things get worse, I can't possibly vote to implement a plan that won't help our unemployment situation.  Unfortunately, that's exactly what this bill neglects to do.  It taxes businesses at an unbelievably high rate-as high as 150 percent more for some businesses-handcuffing them so they can't afford to hire the unemployed workers searching for jobs in Indiana."
