Legislation coauthored by Rep. Price signed into law
STATEHOUSE- House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1037, which deals with broadcasters during emergencies or disasters, was signed into law by Governor Pence. State Representative John Price (R-Greenwood) is the coauthor of the bill.
To ensure that the public has quick access to emergency information, HEA 1037 allows the appropriate personnel access to make any necessary repairs to ensure the public has quick access to emergency information.
“When a disaster or emergency occurs, radio and TV are often the fastest ways to get information regarding the happenings, so it is vital that these outlets remain up and running,” said Rep. Price. “It is important that properly trained personnel have access to make any necessary repairs in order to ensure that the public has the best information during emergencies.”
Previously, engineers and other technicians could be fined or arrested if they attempted to get into an effected emergency area and would have to wait for the all-clear from first responders. This could lead to a delay in communication regarding the emergency.
“As a former first responder, I am very proud to have coauthored this piece of legislation,” said Rep. Price. “This measure ensures that our engineers and technicians are prepared and trained in order to provide the most up to date information for Hoosiers during an emergency. This is a strong public safety measure.”
This measure will go into effect July 1, 2014.
