STATEHOUSE— State Representative Jim Baird (R-Greencastle) congratulates Greencastle Community Schools on becoming one of the first recipients of Indiana’s “Excellence in Performance Awards for Teachers” grant.
Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Tony Bennett honored 28 school corporations throughout the state during a press conference held at the Statehouse on Thursday.
The grant was created by the General Assembly during the 2011 legislative session and distributes $6 million to winning school corporations around the state to recognize and reward their excellent teachers.
“I want to congratulate Greencastle Community School for receiving this award,” said Rep. Baird. “I know it is because of the administration’s and teachers’ hard work and dedication to their students that this award was earned. It is through great teachers that we produce great students and I am glad we can congratulate the teachers of Greencastle Community Schools on a job well done.”
Grant winners were selected based on satisfying legal standards as well as the quality of the school corporation’s performance evaluation system in terms of ability to accurately differentiate teacher effectiveness, provide meaningful feedback to employees, and to support, develop and retain excellent teachers.
“In Greencastle, it was a wonderful collective effort to move as we did, to be able to create the evaluation piece,” said Lori Richmond, Greencastle School System Superintendent. “Administrators and teachers met hours and hours to create the evaluation piece that would be meaningful in the classroom, that would help shine the excellence in education, and show areas that need to be improved. Greencastle has wonderful teaching and learning happening every day and this grant helps us to promote that and to honor all those who work to make that happen every day.”
Greencastle Community Schools are being awarded a grant of $166,437.
“I still remember my grade school teachers and how they utilized their teaching skills to help us grasp concepts and further understand various subject matter,” said Rep. Baird. “It is through teachers like this and those at Greencastle Community Schools who put significant time and energy into the growth and development of their students that enable students to succeed not only in the present but throughout their lifetime. So again, I want to congratulate Greencastle Community School, the students, administrators and teachers who made this possible.”
