Rep. Turner receives Legislator of the Year Award

STATEHOUSE – The Aviation Association of Indiana (AAI) presented State Representative P. Eric Turner (R-Cicero) with the Legislator of the Year Award last night. During the AAI’s annual conference in Plymouth, Rep. Turner received the award for his work to alter the state’s tax structure to help Indiana’s aviation businesses better compete on a level playing with neighboring states.

“I’m honored to receive this award, and I will continue to work to strengthen Indiana’s aviation industry which contributed more than $14 billion to the Hoosier economy in 2012,” said Rep. Tuner. “As a member of Ways and Means, I understand the major economic impact and importance aviation has on our state, and we must sustain the momentum that has made Indiana a “fly-to” rather than a “fly-over” state. Having roughly 69,000 Hoosiers employed in this industry, we must seek-out and support new mechanisms that continue to attract aviation businesses to Indiana.”

Developed by the AAI, the Legislator of the Year Award recognizes elected officials that reflect the AAI’s mission which is to promote positive economic attributes of airports and aviation. Additionally, the AAI works to provide an educational forum for its members to share information relating to their experiences in aviation.

Most notably, Rep. Turner received the award for authoring House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1545 which in part takes the state sales tax on maintenance and aviation fuel and replaces it with a flat rate on fuel purchases. With the amount that operators save under this new law, Indiana is better able to compete with others states that have attracted aviation businesses in the past with their lower tax rates.

“The Aviation Association of Indiana wants to thank Sen. Brandt Hershman and Rep. Eric Turner for their efforts in supporting Hoosier jobs. As a result of their efforts and many other members of the Indiana General Assembly, Indiana is no longer a flyover state,” said Andrea Montgomery, President of Aviation Association of Indiana and Vice President of Montgomery Aviation. “The changes to the tax structure allow Indiana aviation businesses to compete on a level playing field with aviation businesses in other neighboring states.  I have talked to airports across the state that have noticed an increase in business as a result of the changes.  Simply put – these changes created Hoosier jobs and that is why we are honored to name them as our legislators of the year.”
