Rep. Turner appointed to interim study committees

STATEHOUSE – State Representative P. Eric Turner (R-Cicero) has been appointed to be an alternate for the Budget Committee and to serve as a member of the Health Finance Commission and the Commission on State Tax & Financing Policy.

“I look forward to continuing the work we accomplished from session and finding solutions to issues affecting Hoosiers,” said Rep. Turner. “I have had the privilege of serving on these committees in recent years, and many ideas that may affect our state's finances have been developed to become legislation in the next session and eventually become law. Indiana is one of only nine states to have a triple-A bond rating, which stems from the Legislature’s stance on having an efficient and limited government.”

Every year after the legislative session is completed, the Legislative Council meets to assign topics for study during the interim as well as establish any new interim committee that is needed to examine a particular issue. Most interim committees begin meeting in July with their work wrapping up toward the end of October.

Interim committees are an integral part of the legislative process. Even though session is adjourned for 2013, representatives continue their legislative duties by conducting in-depth studies of various topics assigned to their committees. Interim committees with specific expertise receive public testimony and work out the details of proposed legislation before it is introduced in the 2014 session.

“The discussions and deliberations that take place in interim study committees lay the foundation for the upcoming session. Garnering the public’s opinion on pertinent matters and hearing from experts is essential to the legislative process. I encourage all Hoosiers to stay engaged while we discussed future legislation. Only by working together can we craft the best public policy,” said Rep. Turner.
