(STATEHOUSE) July 28, 2008 - State Representative Jeff Thompson (R-Lizton) has been assigned to two interim study committees aimed at preparing the General Assembly for important issues in education that will likely be discussed during the next legislative session. House leaders appointed Rep. Thompson to these committees. Representative Thompson will serve on the Interim Study Committee on Education Matters. This committee will study many education-related issues, which may include college readiness, high school athlete steroid testing and home schooling requirements. Additionally, Rep. Thompson was recently appointed to the Interim Committee on Adult Education, a committee that was established during the 2008 legislative session to focus primarily on funding for adult education programs. "Summer study committees are such an important part of our work as legislators," said Rep. Thompson. "Our work on these committees provides researched and bipartisan recommendations that guide us during the legislative session. I am anxious to begin examining significant issues facing education for children and adults in Indiana." The Indiana General Assembly is a part-time legislature and meets on a two-year cycle, four months one year and three months the following year. Important statewide issues can be dealt with efficiently year-round through the use of the Interim Study Committees and Statutory Commissions. These two types of study groups convene regularly through the remainder of the year and discuss key issues that could lead to possible legislation in the upcoming session. During the legislative session, Rep. Thompson serves on the Ways and Means Committee and is a top advisor for the House Republicans on schools and school funding issues. Rep. Thompson has taught high school math, physics and chemistry for over 25 years. He also is a member of the Education Committee during legislative session and has authored many bills regarding education in the past. Rep. Thompson encourages local constituents to contact him with questions or concerns through e-mail at h28@in.gov, or by calling the Statehouse toll-free at 1-800-382-9841. It is also possible to write him at 200 W. Washington St, Indianapolis, IN 46204. -30- |
