Senate Bill 250, a measure to transfer the responsibility for the Indiana Veterans' Home from the State Health Commissioner to the Department of Veterans' Affairs passed the House yesterday in a 92-4 vote. State Rep. Rich McClain (R-Logansport) co-authored the bill.
"The men and women who have served in the United States military deserve the utmost respect and I believe this measure serves the best interests of our veterans," said Rep. McClain. "Transferring responsibility for the Veteran's Home will ensure that our veterans receive the highest quality care possible."
Under the Department of Veterans' Affairs, the veterans' home will be eligible for state and federal funding, allowing it to receive much-needed dollars, providing the patients with better care. The state health commissioner supports the transfer.
This bill will also require the veterans' home to post a notice that patients may request information with the names of all personnel or direct-care staff on duty.
After passing the Senate and the House, the bill will now move onto the governor's desk for his signature. The bill would take effect July 1, 2008.
