STATEHOUSE - State Rep. Doug Gutwein (R-Francesville) began his legislative career today as a new member of the 116th General Assembly during Organization Day ceremonies. Rep. Gutwein, one of eight new Republican members of the House, represents District 16.

"It is a great honor to be elected by the people of District 16 as their representative," Rep. Gutwein said. "There is much work to be done this session, perhaps none more important than giving Hoosiers a lean and balanced state budget."

Indiana Supreme Court Justice Frank Sullivan Jr. presided over the swearing-in of the 100 members of the House.

Organization Day is traditionally a ceremonial affair, with the swearing-in being the important event. The General Assembly convenes Jan. 7.

"More than anything, this session needs to be about fiscal responsibility," Rep. Gutwein said. "With the economy in the shape it's in, we can't afford anything less. The taxpayers have entrusted us with a great responsibility, and it is our job to meet their needs. We must cut out any waste and excess in the budget, press forward in the quest to cap property taxes constitutionally and continue to make the education of our children a top priority."
