STATEHOUSE (Feb. 22, 2018) — State Rep. Alan Morrison (R-Brazil) helped a local business owner save her signature ice cream.

Jodi Lohrman, owner and operator of Honeysuckle Hill Bee-stro in Brazil, recently received notice her establishment’s signature dessert would need to come off the menu.

“I was informed by Sundae’s Homemade Ice Cream, the folks who make our Honey Graham Ice Cream, that the Indiana Board of Animal Health told them they could no longer add honey as an ingredient to ice cream,” Lohrman said. “My heart sank when I heard the news. I kept thinking of our guests who absolutely love our exclusive ice cream.”

Lohrman reached out to the IBOAH and found the decision was made based on information provided by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

“I called the FDA for clarification and they said honey could be added to ice cream,” Lohrman said. “I also contacted the surrounding states and the three that got back to me said they did allow honey to be added to their states’ ice cream.”

She then contacted Morrison’s office for legislative help with submitting appropriate paperwork and coordinating with IBOAH.

“We just wanted to make sure Jodi had the support she needed in this situation,” Morrison said. “This is a prime example of how businesses and government agencies can work together and have a positive outcome. And, the ice cream is really great.”

Lohrman was recently contacted by IBOAH about its decision.

“I’m happy to report that IBOAH has reversed their decision and honey can now, once again, be added to ice cream in Indiana,” Lohrman said. “I know it may sound silly to fight for an ice cream, but people really do love locally sourced food.”
