House supports Mahan’s legislation increasing school safety
STATEHOUSE (Feb. 29, 2016) – The Indiana House of Representatives passed legislation 97-0 that would equip educators with technology to alert local law enforcement of an emergency.
State Rep. Kevin Mahan (R-Hartford City) sponsored Senate Bill 147, which would help create safer environments for students. This technology would allow emergency departments to monitor what is happening inside a building during a crisis. Under this proposal, emergency responders would be able to directly contact teachers in dangerous situations.
“By implementing this technology, Indiana will be one of the first states to create these school safety standards,” Mahan said. “As a parent, I want our children and educators to be able to focus on their education instead of their safety. Keeping our schools safe is my top priority.”
Senate Bill 147 is now eligible to be considered by the governor. For more information visit, www.iga.in.gov.
Rep. Mahan represents portions of Blackford, Delaware, Grant and Wells counties.
