STATEHOUSE-State Representative Douglas Gutwein (R-Francesville) authored House Bill 1109. The bill allows United States veterans to put their veteran status on their Indiana-issued identification card, drivers' license or permit.A uniform identification system for veterans would help with recognition and identification for applicable benefits, such as discounts offered at various retailers and restaurants, veteran housing programs, financial assistance benefits and education benefits.

"Veterans would benefit from a streamlined process to easily prove their eligibility," said Rep. Gutwein. "Veterans have provided unyielding service and sacrifice for all of us, recognition is just one small way to repay that debt of gratitude."

The House passed the bill unanimously.

"I think it was something we needed to do and the Indiana House felt the same way."
