STATEHOUSE (Aug. 17, 2018) — Local family farms were recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for being in operation for 100 years or more, according to State Sen. Brian Buchanan (R-Lebanon) and State Rep. Sharon Negele (R-Attica).

These farms throughout the area were presented a Hoosier Homestead Centennial Award:

  • The Putt Farm, located in Jasper County, has been in operation since 1902;
  • The Guth/Waibel Farm, located in Jasper County, has been in operation since 1899;
  • The Lemming Farm, located in White County, has been in operation since 1894;
  • The Humphreys Farm, located in White County, has been in operation since 1883; and
  • The Sheets Farm, located in White County, has been in operation since 1918.

“Contributing more than $31 billion annually and supporting more than 107,000 Hoosier jobs, Indiana’s agriculture industry is a major part of our economy and culture,” Buchanan said. “These families deserve special recognition for their dedication to their family farms and Indiana’s agriculture community.”

“Family farms contribute greatly to our state’s economy and agricultural heritage,” Negele said. “Our area is fortunate to be home to so many century-old farms. Congratulations to these families for all their hard work and success.”

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes farms that have been owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more. Families can qualify for the centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial award.

Each year, two awards ceremonies are held in the spring and summer commemorating the achievements of farm families across the state. For more information on the Hoosier Homestead Award Program, visit www.in.gov/isda/2337.htm.
