STATEHOUSE (June 29, 2017) – Gov. Eric Holcomb today ceremonially signed into law State Rep. Wes Culver’s (R-Goshen) legislation creating the Indiana Bicycle Trail Task Force.
According to Culver, the task force will develop at least six actionable concepts to connect existing bicycle trails throughout the state and determine how to fund each proposal. The group, comprised of volunteers appointed by the governor, will make recommendations on how to increase bicycle safety on trails and roadways.
“The task force will work at uniting all trail building projects throughout Indiana in an effort to connect existing and new trails,” Culver said. “By coordinating all our efforts together throughout the state we can end up with thousands of connected miles of trails. This program can make Indiana the premiere state in America for biking. Currently, most municipalities build trails with only their community in mind. With little to no extra effort they can masterplan to connect to adjoining communities. This task force can provide that coordination and vision. The end result is increased tourism for Indiana, increased enjoyment for local Hoosiers and increased quality of life, which attracts new employers.”
These volunteers will develop proposals over the next two years, and then present a final report of their proposed concepts to the legislative council and executive branch.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources reported in 2015 that there are approximately 1,371 miles of hard surface trails and the Indiana Department of Transportation has 3,268 miles of trails and bikeways open for public use across the state.
State Rep. Wes Culver represents House District 49, which includes portions of Elkhart County.
