Bill supporting volunteer firefighters passes House

STATEHOUSE – State Representative Tom Saunders (R-Lewisville) voted in favor of a bill that allows an individual to serve as a volunteer firefighter as well as a township board member. House Bill (HB) 1433, authored by State Representative Kevin Mahan (R-Hartford City), unanimously passed out of the House.

“For smaller communities, it is important that citizens, who want to serve in multiple capacities, are able to do so. I would like to recognize and thank Representative Mahan for his hard work and for authoring this bill,” said Rep. Saunders.

HB 1433 allows a city, town or township official to serve as a volunteer firefighter for the fire department that provides services to the same community. This bill also requires the county fiscal body, rather than the township board, to adopt the final budget and tax levy for that city, enabling firefighters to run fire protection services as well as be a township trustee without a conflict of interest.

“In rural Indiana, it is difficult to find volunteer firefighters,” said Rep. Saunders. “To not allow them to volunteer because they serve in another capacity is inefficient, and this bill is a step in the right direction to rectify that.”

HB 1433 has been sent to the Senate for further consideration. Visit for more information on HB 1433.
