STATEHOUSE (Oct. 23, 2018) – College students and recent graduates seeking an internship with the Indiana House of Representatives must submit their applications before the Oct. 31 deadline, according to area lawmakers.

“Internships provide students a chance to develop their skills and gain experience before they enter their careers,” said State Rep. Don Lehe (R-Brookston). “This is a great opportunity for them to show what they’ve learned in their classes and see that knowledge applied in a work setting.”

House internships are paid positions during the legislative session lasting from January through April.

State Rep. Sharon Negele (R-Attica) said while employed full time at the Statehouse in Indianapolis, interns can develop valuable skills while working one-on-one with state legislators and staff.

“Interns work closely with an assigned staff member and group of lawmakers throughout the legislative session,” Negele said. “This allows young professionals to gain hands-on experience and make connections that will open doors for full-time employment after college.”

College sophomores, juniors and seniors, graduate students, and recent graduates of all majors are eligible to apply. According to State Rep. Sally Siegrist (R-West Lafayette), internship positions are available in a variety of departments including legislative, communications and media relations, policy or fiscal policy.

“With positions available in multiple departments, interns can tailor the internship to fit their interests,” Siegrist said. “This creates a more valuable, meaningful experience, and allows college students and recent graduates to hone skills they likely will be using during future internships or jobs.”

When applying, students must also submit an official transcript, resume and two letters of recommendation.
