Rep. Cook: Pig Farmer of the Year

Dear Friend,

Did you know Tipton County is home to America's Pig Farmer of the Year? Our own Keith Schoettmer recently earned this unique title from the National Pork Board. I welcomed Schoettmer to the Statehouse where he was joined by his family and recognized by the General Assembly for securing this first-ever title.

The award identifies pig farmers who take an ethical “We Care” approach to raising pigs and commends farmers who communicate with consumers regarding the methods of pork production. Schoettmer is a 1980 Purdue University graduate who went on to manage a purebred Duroc farm in central Illinois. In 1997, he established Schoettmer Prime Pork Farm in Tipton with his wife, Darla.

In 2001, he served as Indiana Pork President — which allowed him to make several trips to Washington, D.C. on behalf of pork producers. He has also been awarded a Meritorious Service Award in 2005 from Indiana Pork, and played an important role in the formation of the Indiana Pork Advocacy Coalition.

He served as chair of the Midwest Pork Conference, and the Tipton County Chamber of Commerce recently named Schoettmer Prime Pork Farm the 2015 Business of the Year.

Thank you and congratulations Keith! Businesses like yours provide jobs to hard-working Hoosiers and help support our economy.

Sincerely,

State Rep. Tony Cook
