While this may be a temporary inconvenience, we need to think about the purpose of this project. With roughly 50,000 cars traveling this road every single day, the state and local communities are investing $124 million to turn this roadway into an expressway-style thoroughfare with roundabouts.

Huston: Startling vaping data means more work needs to be done

The Centers for Disease Control is investigating more than 1,000 lung injury cases and 18 deaths across the country, including in Indiana. That is because all those reported patients have a history of using e-cigarettes. In the Hoosier state, e-cigarette use – commonly known as “vaping” – has skyrocketed almost 400% over the past six years. The majority of those users are between the ages of 18 and 34 years old. This data is alarming and serves as a wakeup call that more needs to be done to make sure fewer young people choose to use e-cigarettes or vapes.

Through Indiana’s Community Crossings Matching Grant Program, we are driving significant funding to local communities. These grants are part of an unprecedented effort to assist local governments with road and bridge projects to keep Indiana’s reputation as the Crossroads of America. Since 2016, our state’s local road and bridge investment increased 76%, with more than $850 million invested just this year.

Already this month, two Hoosiers have died from severe lung injuries linked to vaping usage. Sadly, three people in Indiana have died overall since early September from something some people consider an alternative and healthier option to smoking.
